ACNE TREATMENT FACTS

ACNE TREATMENT FACTS

About acne treatment

We can prescribe a wide range of treatments for mild or moderate acne. Topical treatments, either on their own, or combined with an antibiotic, can be effective ways to manage your acne. We’ll help you find the treatment that’s right for you.

If you have severe acne that might include scarring or painful lumps, please see your GP in person.

How do the treatments work?

Depending on what treatment you’re prescribed it will either work to stop acne from forming or to treat acne symptoms by reducing blackheads, whiteheads and skin irritation.

How do I take the treatments?

The creams and gels would need to be applied daily. Depending on which one you’re prescribed, you might need to apply them twice a day. If you’re also prescribed an antibiotic tablet you would take one tablet, daily. Zineryt solution would be applied using an applicator morning and night.

What are the side effects of acne treatment?

Side effects for the gels, creams and solution can include dry, irritated skin, redness and a burning sensation when you apply them. Products containing benzoyl peroxide can also bleach clothing so you need to take care when you apply them.

The antibiotic pills can give you an upset stomach and cause diarrhoea. They might also give you a bit of a headache.

Your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight during treatment, so be sure to use sunscreen in direct sunlight and wear suitable clothing.

For the full information on a medicine’s side effects and how to take it, it’s important to read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medicine.

How effective are acne treatments?

The treatments are all intended to manage your acne. But they might not make you fully spot-free and it will take some time for them to work. If we prescribe treatment, our clinicians will be in touch after six weeks to check that the medicine is suiting you.

You might experience flare-ups again in the future, which may need similar treatment.

Important safety information

It’s important that you tell us which other medicines you’re taking — whether they’re prescription or medicines you’ve bought without a prescription. You must also tell us of any other conditions you live with. We need to know so that we can prescribe a suitable treatment for you.

What if I’m pregnant?

You must tell us if you’re pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. Zineryt is a safe suitable option that we can offer in these circumstances.

What are my options if I don’t get treated?

Acne isn’t harmful and it usually gets better as you get older. But you should try to avoid the temptation to pick at your spots as they can leave scars.

Acne can also affect your mood and self-confidence. If this happens to you, you should talk to your GP in person.
